NMIP was to focus on assisting instructors to have an authentic understanding of students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. The authors reflected on whether today’s instructors have a better and more authentic understanding of students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

I think that may be true for some instructors, but it’s doubtful that is the case across the board. The demographic make-up of the teaching personnel in the various IEP programs has not changed much since the NMIP was originally funded. For example, in a recent survey by Butler (2020), interpreter education students were asked about their exposure to same-race instructors in their programs. Close to 70% of the students of color reported they were not exposed to instructors who were from the same racial, ethnic, or linguistic background as they were. Also, in focus group sessions with interpreting students of color regarding their experiences in their programs, most of the students indicated that their programs were designed more for white hearing interpreters and not for students of color (Schafer & Cokely, 2016).
